Chapter 1: The Days Before

October, Sunday the 23Th.

It was cold in Death City. The weather report said it was going to snow next week but Maka wasn't buying it. I was simply way too early for snow just yet. She stared at her desk, the homework she had to do for math was done but she was just checking just in case. After a good check-up she decided to relax a bit.

Soul was sitting on the couch, watching some sport-channel. Blair was sitting on his lap playing with one of her toys.

"He, Soul? You finished you're homework yet?"

"Yeah", he replied as lazy as ever. "But man, that math-assignment was so uncool". Then he yawned, loudly." I think I will go to bed now." He then looked at Maka. What about you?

"Well, I was thinking of watching a movie or something. I'm kind of bored as it is". She knew staying in late was a bad idea because it Sunday.

"Yeah, you're right. It's getting late." The clock only said 21:34 but considering how Soul was being dull. She decided to get bed early to.

Maka got up way early the next morning. She sat straight up and rubbed her eyes. Glancing at the clock she saw it was only 8:00. They had the first couple of periods out and had to start at 11:55 so she more then enough time. She decided to take a shower and then have an easy breakfast.

As soon as she got out of the shower, she heard the sound of pans and something started to smell really good. She got dressed and saw Soul half asleep, and in his pyjamas above the frying pan making an omelette. He glanced up, with sleepy eyes.

"Morning,"

"Morning, hungry?" He replied still half asleep

"Sure. I'd like mine scrambled if you don't mind."

"Sure, that's fine."

She picked up a newspaper and started reading. Nothing special was noted. Someone was arrested for theft, there was the weather report, which now clamed it was going to be 5 degrees warmer.  Then something caught her eye. There was a facility blown up. They were studying all matter of biological engineering. Apparently there was a subject gone mental and in turn blew up the facility. There only 5 survivors and 2 of them were highly injured. They were still investigating the matter but they didn't have any leads on the cause of the accident

"Hey, what wrong Maka? You're looking worried al of the sudden". Soul looked over, now more awake and had a worried look on his face.

"No, its nothing." Maka tried to smile back but it didn't work much. Soul was still staring back at her. Eventually he sighed and went back to the eggs, mumbling something along the line of 'bookworm'.

After breakfast, they got dressed but as usual Soul forever to get dressed.

"Well if you kept you're room more tidy, you would not have to find you're entire room for some decent cloths!" Maka yelled outside Soul's door.

The door opened and Soul walked out wearing a white long sleeve shirt, a black jacket and beige pants. "Why do you want to go so early to school anyway?" It's only 10:25 and the ride takes only 15 minutes on my bike.

"Because!" Maka yelled." I want to see Chrona before school. She just got back from Medusa and she has enough trouble as it is!"

"Fine, don't get you panties up in a bunch, tiny tits." Soul said back and started to chuckle at his own insult

Soul didn't see the giant book swung by Maka.

MAKA-CHOP!

As soon as they came to Shibusen, Maka went straight to Chrona's room. Soul went to park his bike and go ahead to class so he did joined her along. Maka rushed to the lower parts of Shibusen and went into the guest wing, where Chrona's room was located. When she came to her room, she heard a noise.

Something behind that door was making a very weird noise, sounded like someone was being drowned in water. So she slowly peeked her head around the door.

"Chrona, are you in here?"

The sobbing didn't end, so Maka went inside to see what happened. She found Chrona hiding in Mister Corner and her face was smothered within a pillow.

"What's wrong?" Maka asked while she tried to pat the nervous swordmeister on the head.

She pulled back thought because Chrona lifted her head and Maka saw that half her face in a deep red colour. It was wet from tears and she had a bloody nose and a drip of her black blood hang from her pillow to her nose.

"He...he..he pushed my h..he..head against the wall" Chrona sobbed out.

The person who Chrona was talking about made his grand entrance by making a loud noise and screaming on the top of its 'lungs'. Ragnorok decided it was a good time to pop out.

As soon as he popped out, he started banging Chrona's head with his tiny fists.

"You bitch, this is the second time you made me small again. I will beat the shit out of you woman" Ragnorok was clearly not aware of Maka's presence.

Maka simply stared to the strange sight in front of her. As soon as she made a sound, Ragnorok looked in her direction.

"YOU! This is you're fault! Come here you! I will drown you in a barrel!" Ragnorok stopped beating Chrona but now started to use his tiny arms to swing at Maka, who was way out of range.

"Ragnorok stop it!" Chrona was still sobbing but found the courage to speak up to her tiny, but bullying weapon. "It wasn't Maka's fault! She saved us from lady Medusa and now we have or friends back again."

Ragnorok started to go back to his frail meister by giving her a noggin. "Then why am I small again, you little brat!?" Ragnorok keep spouting.

"Because all you're souls were confiscated again!" Chrona replied. "Stop giving me a noggin please! It hurts"

Ragnorok pointed at Maka! "And that her fault! She found us! The tiny breasted pig woman! The bookworm of all people! The...."

Whatever Ragnorok was about to say remained, remained unsaid because Maka had enough of the little weapon and had hit it hard on the head, causing it to slither back into Chrona's body.

"Thanks Maka-Chan." Chrona said out with a soft voice.

"No problem, I figured he needs a beating once I a while." Make looked at the still beaten meister. "Let's get you cleaned up and go to class OK?"

"Yeah", Chrona replied

Soul was already sitting in the class room, chatting to Black★Star. Maka and Chrona went to their seats and waited for class to begin.

After sitting there and talking back and forth. Maka noticed Professor Stein was late. Very late.

"I wondered where Professor Stein." Maka asked out loud

Kid replied. "I think saw him around campus, so he can't be sick. He looked perfectly fine. Other then that massive screw in his head off course."

Then the door opened and Stein, Sid and Maka's father came out. They were carrying a projector and a projection screen. The TV was put down, and both Sid and Maka's father went back to their own classes.

"Alright class." Stein started. "As you can see we have a special lesson today. Lord Death asked me to tell you about the next steps in Shibusen's actions. Jackie, could you turn of the lights?"

The lights were turn of and the projector came to life.

"First of", Stein started his presentation." There has been alarming series of events around the world regarding the Kishin. Though we do not yet know his exact location....we do know there more cases of pre-Kishin eggs every day. Also, there has been note of witches trying to find the Kishin to harvest its insanity. Much like the Witch Medusa, who recently escaped out of Shibusen's hands?"

Chrona shivered at that name. Maka could understand. She had been though much. Having to grow up with such a vile woman and when she finally got away from her clutches, she forced Chrona to betray her friends. Then, having to face brainwashing and other of her experiments. At least she back now and save and sound again.

Stein continued. "Also, as you may know others have been trying to overthrow Shibusen. We lost one of our Deathscyte's, Tezca Tlipoca in our battle against Noah. As you might imagine, Lord Death is worrying for the well-being of our student. He would like to warn of you of to be extra careful on you're mission."

Black★Star could not contain his patience anymore and yelled out. "What's this about being careful?! The great I will take out all of these enemies!"

"This isn't a joking matter Black★Star ", Stein replied sternly."There have been more reports of people dieing since the Grim-Ages. Don't take this warning lightly. Just this week there has been too many students gone missing or killed during their missions."

Black★Star gulped down the words and decided to go sit again.

"Anyhow", Stein started of again, "now some brighter news."

"Because of the recent madness-outbreak, new meister and weapons were created in the progress. These people will attain to our school on Thursday. Because this class now exist of only 2 star meisters, we will take on the task of instructing the new students. These students will switch around groups to get to know each other and after a month will be included to the teams. They are to be... Yes Kid?"

Kid has raised his hand. "Where are these people to stay?" he asked. "I know from my father that Death City is crowded as it is, with the people seeking safety here."

"Well." Stein replied. "First of all they were expected to stay in the guest wing or of they can find home in the city. I strongly recommend taking people in you're home so both parties can get used to each others wavelength. Second of all it's not that many people. Only around 57."

Kid put his hand down and looked a bit paler then before. Maka hear him mumbling something along the line of: Such an asymmetrical number.

As the projector turned of and the light went on professor Stein clapped his hands. "Well then, if there are anymore questions, ask them now because we will begin our usual dissection lesson straight after."

"Looks like you going to have more company in the guest wing don't you think Chrona?"

Tsubaki, Chrona and Maka were sitting just outside the basketball court while Patty, Kid, Soul and Black★Star shot some hoops. Liz had gone of to go shopping.

Chrona looked up at Tsubaki. She shakily replied, "I...I.I hope there...won't be any strange...people. I don't know how to deal with strange people."

"Aw common Chrona!" Maka pouted a bit before going on. "We have the order freak Kid, our loudmouth Black★Star, a professor with a screw in his head and our headmaster AND mayor is a Death God. I think it can't get any stranger then this cant it?"

"I guess you're right, still I hope it stays quiet in the guest wing". Chrona replied.

"You can always live with us if you want Chrona." Maka wanted to ask that, just to keep Chrona out of that damp, prison like room of hers.

"No thanks, Maka. I appreciate the though and all but I don't want to give you any more trouble after the whole. . ."

She went silent straight after with her face a bit red. She was still thinking they hated her after she was taken way by Medusa.

"Ow ok." Maka pouted. "Let's just hope for the best ok?"

"Ok."

Still, Maka could not help to be a bit curious about the new students.
